Personality

I've always been a bit skeptical of the notion that babies' personalities are evident from birth, but I sure am taking delight in seeing the ways in which Cassia's temperament and approach to life are manifesting themselves these days.

She's very focused. If she's in the middle of something, it's hard work trying to divert her attention from it.

She's very methodical. Yesterday Craig and I observed her playing with a pile of cloth wipes on the lounge room floor. She was stacking them one on top of the other, and wouldn't pick up the next one until she was satisfied with the job she'd done of the previous one.

She's very neat. Her pile of cloth wipes was as tidy as any I've ever stacked.

She's an extrovert! This one we can hardly believe since it doesn't run in either of our families very much. She enjoys being in the company of others, and gets along well with other children (read: doesn't get upset when other kids snatch toys off her, crowd around her or even knock her over, and seems reasonably willing to share toys with other kids).

She's easygoing. She's quite happy to go along with whatever we're doing and to comply with our requests - as long as she's not already in the middle of something else (see point #1).

She's sensitive. Dada and Mama may not get into an intense tussle during a game of indoor soccer with the pink ball, even if they're laughing. It's too upsetting for her. Same goes for footsies under the table.

What this all means, however, remains to be seen. I wouldn't mind betting we have an engineer in the making, but time will tell.

I've been amazed at how early Sunshine's personality has shown up. I'd say even at birth, especially when hearing stories from other moms in my midwife group--like the mom whose baby goes to sleep on his own no problem, while Sunshine absolutely hated that. Or our friend's baby who loved being swaddled tight, while Sunshine always had to have her arms free. As you say, though, it's fun to watch as their personality develops and grows more distinct. :)
